A new court filing made on behalf of plaintiffs in Roundup cancer lawsuits alleges that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) tried to protect Monsanto’s interests and unfairly aided the agrichemical industry.

What’s the Problem?
February 21, 2017 – The filing (PDF) includes what plaintiffs attorneys claim are correspondences from an EPA scientist who accuses Jess Rowland, former head of the agency’s cancer assessment on glyphosate, of playing “your political conniving games with the science” to favor pesticide manufacturers like Monsanto.
Rowland was a key author of a report which found that glyphosate — the main ingredient in Roundup and many other herbicides — was not likely to cause cancer. However, in the correspondence, longtime EPA toxicologist Marion Copley cites evidence from animal studies, concluding that “It is essentially certain that glyphosate causes cancer.”
The correspondence goes on to accuse Rowland of intimidating Copley’s staff into altering reports on glyphosate and of aiding Monsanto in downplaying the cancer risk associated with the herbicide. Copley left the EPA in 2012 and died from breast cancer in January 2014 at the age of 66.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) declared in March 2015 that glyphosate was a probable human carcinogen. Monsanto has rejected this claim and mounted a campaign aimed at discrediting the IARC.
The filing, if authentic, could prove pivotal in the rapidly growing Roundup multidistrict litigation (MDL No. 2741) now underway in the Northern District of California. All the lawsuits were filed on behalf of individuals who allegedly got non-Hodgkins lymphoma from Roundup, and accuse Monsanto of failing to adequately warn about risk of the disease.
