Decades-Old Research Links Glyphosate Herbicides to Cancer Risk

Studies identifying a link between glyphosate-based herbicides and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL) go back to at least 1986. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association [1] looked at the instances of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in farmers.

The researchers determined that participants who used glyphosate herbicides more than 20 days per year were 6 times more likely to develop non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma compared to non-farmers who did not use the weed killers. Those who mixed and applied herbicide on their own had an even greater increased risk, the study found.

In 2001, Canadian scientists drew similar conclusions when studying men who used insecticides and herbicides that are organophosphorus (compounds that contain phosphorous) in nature, including glyphosate. The researchers concluded that men who used these chemicals had a 73% increased risk of being subsequently diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

How Does Glyphosate Cause Cancer?

In May 2014, scientists at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) confirmed the link between glyphosate exposure and non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Looking at 44 individual studies published since 1980, the authors said that people exposed to glyphosate had double the risk of developing non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma compared to people who were not exposed to the chemical.

The researchers concluded that glyphosate causes genetic mutations in white blood cells, thereby weakening the body’s immune system and ability to fight off disease.

• Swollen lymph nodes in your neck, armpits, or groin

How Long After Exposure to Roundup Does Cancer Develop?

A latency period is defined as the duration of time between your exposure to Roundup and the date of your diagnosis. In most cases, lymphoma associated with high-dose exposure to glyphosate takes at least 2 years to develop, according to a recent study.

How Long Does Glyphosate Stay in the Body?

Glyphosate and its metabolite AMPA can be accurately measured in blood and urine. However, because glyphosate and AMPA do not typically stay in the body for more than a few hours to a few days, these biomarkers can only help determine recent exposure to glyphosate.
