Cancer Research Agency Says Roundup Ingredient is “Possibly Carcinogenic”
The World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has called glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, “probably carcinogenic,” according to a report published in The Lancet Oncology in March 2015 [1]. IARC’s report says that glyphosate caused cancer in laboratory animals and found that the chemical damaged DNA in human cells. The report is currently under review by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), with a full assessment expected by Spring 2017.
What is Small Lymphocytic Lymphoma?
Small Lymphocytic Lymphoma (SLL) is the most common form of B-cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma that occurs when malignant lymphocytes (cancer cells) are found in the tissues of the lymph nodes, bone marrow, spleen, and/or liver. When malignant lymphocytes are present in the peripheral blood, the condition is called chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL).

SLL Cancer Symptoms
Since small lymphocytic lymphoma is an indolent (slow-growing) cancer, many patients with the disease may not even know they have it until it becomes untreatable. When symptoms of SLL cancer do present, however, they may include:
- Tender, swollen abdomen
- Feeling full even after eating only a small amount
- Fatigue
- Shortness of breath
- Anemia
- Bruising easily
- Night sweats
- Weight loss
- Frequent infections

Lymphoma Treatment
Most cases of small lymphocytic lymphoma are not curable; however, many patients survive for a long time and the cancer may remain in remission indefinitely. The problem is that SLL grows so slowly that normal cancer treatments like chemotherapy and radiation are not typically effective. For asymptomatic patients, doctors may recommend a “watch and wait” approach.
Prognosis and Life Expectancy
If left undiagnosed and untreated, SLL can progress into a more aggressive form of lymphoma. After initial treatment, many people have a period of remission, when there are no symptoms of active disease. The illness may not return, but in some patients, it may come back. If small lymphocytic lymphoma returns, it can be treated again and kept under control for many years.
