Roundup Cancer Risks
In March 2015, a report from the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) [1] found that glyphosate — the active ingredient in Roundup and hundreds of other widely-used herbicides — is “probably carcinogenic.” The report says glyphosate caused cancer in lab tests on animals and found that the chemical damaged DNA in human cells. The report is currently under review by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), with a full assessment expected by Spring 2017.

What is Mantle Cell Lymphoma?
Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a rare form of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma that develops in white blood cells called B lymphocytes. The cancer is called “mantle cell” lymphoma because the abnormal lymphocytes come from a part of the lymph node called the “mantle zone.”
Symptoms
Most people with mantle cell lymphoma have cancer cells in more than one lymph node and other parts of the body. Symptoms may include:
- Loss of appetite
- Weight loss
- Fever
- Night sweats
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Swollen lymph nodes in the neck, armpits, or groin
- Heartburn
- Abdominal pain
- Bloating
- Pressure or pain in the lower back
- Fatigue
Treatment
Treatment for mantle cell lymphoma can be similar to treatment for other types of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. However, it can be difficult to cure. It is a fast-growing cancer and people are often diagnosed after the disease reaches its later stages.
The most common treatments for mantle cell lymphoma are:
- Chemotherapy
- Stem cell or bone marrow transplant
- Radiotherapy
- Steroid therapy
- Biological therapy
Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma Prognosis and Survival Rate
The overall 5-year survival rate for mantle cell lymphoma is generally 50% for advanced-stage MCL to 70% for limited-stage MCL. Prognosis is difficult because most patients are not diagnosed until the disease is in its later stages. However, advanced chemotherapy regimens and stem cell transplants have helped make significant improvements in survival. With the introduction of Rituxan, survival rates have improved significantly with many patients surviving over 7 years after diagnosis.

Litigation Status
In September 2016, all lawsuits alleging cancer from Roundup weed killer were consolidated into multidistrict litigation (MDL No. 2741) in the Northern District of California. The complaints allege that Monsanto knew for decades that glyphosate exposure may increase the risk of cancer and other life-threatening side effects. However, despite this knowledge, Monsanto failed to adequately warn of Roundup cancer risks and even sought to deceive the government and consumers about these risks in an effort to maximize profits, according to the lawsuits.
