Update: San Francisco Jury Rules Plaintiff’s Cancer Caused by Roundup

March 19, 2019 – A jury in California’s Northern District has determined that Monsanto’s controversial Roundup herbicide significantly contributed to a man’s development of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, deadly cancer that develops from white blood cells called lymphocytes. The jury of 5 women and 1 man reached a unanimous decision in favor of plaintiff Ed Hardeman after deliberating for a week; the verdict marks another costly setback for Bayer AG, which purchased Monsanto last August for about $63 billion.

Roundup Linked to Cancer, Study Finds

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) [1] announced in 2015 that glyphosate, the main active ingredient in Roundup, is “probably carcinogenic to humans.” IARC’s announcement followed a review published in The Lancet Oncology [2] that looked at studies on humans and laboratory animals exposed to glyphosate and other widely-used herbicides. Three human studies were included in the review, all of which found an increased risk for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma associated with glyphosate exposure.

What is Follicular Lymphoma?

The most common form of blood cancer is lymphoma, which occurs from a defect in white blood cells called lymphocytes. The disease can be classified as Hodgkin’s or non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, according to its characteristics. Follicular lymphoma is a non-Hodgkin’s type of lymphoma, originating in the B lymphocytes, or B-cells, and it is the most common form of slow-growing cancer.

Lymphoma Symptoms

People with follicular lymphoma often have few if any recognizable symptoms. If they do appear, the most likely symptom is one or more swollen glands in the neck, armpit, or groin. Other symptoms may include:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Fever
  • Night sweats
  • Tiredness or fatigue
  • Itching
  • Infections

Treatment and Prognosis (Outlook)

Follicular lymphomas are typically slow-growing (indolent) and respond well to treatment, but they are hard to cure. The cancer may not require any treatment when it is first diagnosed. Instead, treatment may be delayed until the disease is causing problematic symptoms. Over time, about 1 in 3 follicular lymphomas turn into fast-growing diffuse B-cell lymphomas.

Who is Most at Risk?

The people most at risk of cancer from Roundup are farmers, landscapers, nursery employees, and agricultural workers. People who developed any form of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma may be entitled to compensation to assist with:

Regulators to Consider Tighter Restrictions on Glyphosate Use

As a result of the growing evidence linking Roundup to cancer, regulators may soon decide to impose tighter restrictions on glyphosate use. A spokesman for the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) said the agency is evaluating whether glyphosate-containing products may have to be re-labeled as posing a cancer hazard under Proposition 65, according to the New York Times [3].

Roundup Cancer Trial Moves Forward

July 12, 2018 – Hundreds of lawsuits alleging Roundup caused cancer advanced a crucial step forward on Thursday when a judge in the San Francisco Superior Court ruled that a cancer victim could present expert testimony linking the herbicide to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. U.S. District Judge Vince Chhabria said evidence linking glyphosate was “rather weak”; however, he also affirmed that the opinions of 3 experts linking the weed killer to cancer were relevant, and not tantamount to “junk science.”
