What’s the Problem?

June 27, 2017 – Roundup will henceforth be designated as a potential carcinogen under a California state law known as Proposition 65, according to the Huffington Post.

Monsanto vowed to fight the designation, which it said was “unwarranted on the basis of science and the law.”

The prop 65 designation is just the latest setback for Monsanto, which has faced a groundswell of litigation over Roundup since the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on cancer stated that glyphosate was “probably carcinogenic” in March 2015.

Dicamba, a weed killer designed to be used with Monsanto’s next generation of biotech crops, has come under fire in Arkansas after the state’s plant board voted last week to ban the herbicide.

California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) said the designation of glyphosate under Proposition 65 will proceed following an unsuccessful attempt by Monsanto to block the listing in trial court and after requests for stay were denied by a state appellate court and California’s Supreme Court.

Monsanto’s appeal of the trial court’s ruling is pending.
