What’s the Problem?
June 6, 2016 – EU representatives in Brussels today failed to pass a 1-2 year reauthorization of glyphosate to allow for completion of a safety assessment currently underway at the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), according to Reuters.
If the commission fails to reauthorize the chemical’s use by the end of the month, it will be illegal to use throughout the EU, and all products containing glyphosate would be removed from the European market within 6 months. A number of countries including Netherland and France have already moved to restrict public access to the herbicide over health and environmental concerns.
In March 2015, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) published a report (PDF) which concluded that glyphosate is “probably carcinogenic in humans.” The EU previously postponed a vote to reauthorize glyphosate by the Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed (PAFF) after it became evident that there was not enough support from member countries to pass the measure.
Following today’s vote, the commission now has 2 options. The issue will either be referred to an appeal committee which would be scheduled June 20 to allow for a resolution by the end of the month, or the committee can do nothing and allow the June 30 deadline to pass, resulting in an across-the-board market pull of all glyphosate products. However, EU officials are acutely aware of the potential lawsuits that would likely be filed by Monsanto and other glyphosate producers if this were to happen.
