Roundup Cancer Studies
In 1985, an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) committee found that Roundup may cause cancer, according to the New York Times [1]. The agency reversed itself 6 years later after re-evaluating the study that it had based its original conclusion on.
Now the issue is back again. In March 2015, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) published a report in The Lancet Oncology [2] which declared that glyphosate “probably” causes cancer in humans.

What is Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia?
Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is a low-grade type of Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma that affects white blood cells called “lymphocytes” found in the bone marrow. In patients with CLL, the body makes an abnormally high number of lymphocytes that don’t work correctly. Chronic lymphocytic leukemia progresses slowly and mainly affects older individuals.
Chronic Leukemia Symptoms
It is common for chronic lymphocytic leukemia to be asymptomatic in its early stages, during which time the cells can spread to other parts of the body. This makes the cancer extremely difficult to treat. When symptoms of chronic leukemia do appear, however, they may include:
- Easy bruising
- Lump on the neck, armpit, or groin
- Painless enlarged lymph nodes
- Fatigue
- Pain or fullness below the ribs
- Fever
- Infection
- Unexplained weight loss
- Night sweats
How is Lymphoma Staged?
Staging is the process of finding out how far the cancer has spread in a patient. Stages are often useful because they can help guide treatment and diagnose a person’s prognosis (long-term outlook). Most types of cancer are staged based on the size of the tumor and how far the cancer has spread.
However, chronic lymphocytic leukemia does not usually cause tumor masses, so the staging of the cancer depends on other information, such as lab test results and the results of imaging tests.
Leukemia Treatment and Prognosis
CLL treatment options vary depending on the patient’s age, disease risk group, and symptoms. Many people live a long time with cancer, but it is difficult to cure due to the lack of symptoms in its early stages, and early treatment hasn’t been shown to improve life expectancy. For these reasons, doctors often recommend waiting until the disease is progressing or bothersome symptoms appear, before initiating treatment.
Monsanto Lawsuit Alleges Chronic Leukemia from Roundup
A lawsuit (PDF) was filed against Monsanto in September 2015 by a woman who was allegedly diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia after being exposed to Roundup weed killer. Plaintiff Judi Fitzgerald worked as a Growers Assistant for a New York company from 1994 to 1998, where she was in close proximity to plants being sprayed with Roundup, according to the lawsuit. In 2012, Fitzgerald was diagnosed with CLL. The plaintiff alleges that Monsanto failed to adequately warn about the cancer risk with Roundup.
