Update: Figueroa to Stand Trial on Child Sex Abuse Charges
August 8, 2017 – Fernando Figueroa, a former teacher’s aid at Riverside Elementary School in California, has been ordered to stand trial on 8 felony charges involving sexual acts on children, according to the Press Enterprise [1].
Figueroa has been charged with 7 counts of lewd acts on a child under 14 years old and 1 count of oral copulation on a child under 10, with a sentence-enhancing allegation of targeting multiple children. He is currently being held in lieu of $4 million bail, and scheduled to return to court Aug. 22 for a post-preliminary hearing arraignment.
What’s the Problem?
February 22, 2017 – Authorities began investigating 24-year-old Fernando Figueroa after a Liberty Elementary student under the age of 10 told an official that “she was touched by a technology aide in a sexual manner,” according to NBC Los Angeles [2].
Detectives identified additional victims with similar stories of assault and served a search warrant on Figueroa’s residence in the 5000 block of La Sierra Avenue.
Figueroa, who was a technology aide at Liberty Elementary until he was placed on administrative leave and barred from the campus following the allegations, was arrested without incident. He has been charged with several counts of lewd and lascivious acts on a child under the age of 10.
Figueroa was listed as a “dual employee” of the Riverside Unified School District, which runs Liberty Elementary, and the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Redlands-Riverside. He worked at an after-school program as a “youth development professional,” according to P.T. McEwen, chief executive officer of the institution.
“This whole thing comes as a shock,” McEwen said, stressing that Figueroa had passed a federal background check before being hired.
