Dysphagia

The damage caused by a stroke can interfere with the swallowing reflex, making it possible for food and liquid to enter the respiratory tract. Dysphagia, or problems with swallowing, can lead to lung damage and lung infections (pneumonia).

To prevent long-term complications, the patient may require a feeding tube. In most cases, the tube is passed through the nose into the stomach, but in some cases it may be directly connected to the stomach during surgery. The length of time a feeding tube is needed can vary from weeks to months, but it is rare to have to use a tube for more than six months at a time.

Hydrocephalus

Hydrocephalus occurs when there is an excessive amount of cerebrospinal fluid in the cavities of the brain. About 10% of patients who have a hemorrhagic stroke will also develop hydrocephalus.

Cerebrospinal fluid protects the brain and spinal cord, and transports waste products away from brain cells. The fluid flows through the ventricles and across the surface of the brain and spinal cord. Any leftover cerebrospinal fluid is carried away from the brain and absorbed by the body.

A hemorrhagic stroke can block cerebrospinal fluid from draining, and an excess amount of it can build up. Symptoms of this include:

  • Headache
  • Sickness
  • Vomiting
  • Loss of balance

Deep Vein Thrombosis

About 5% of people who have a stroke will also suffer a deep vein thrombosis in their leg. In most cases, this occurs in individuals who have reduced mobility in their legs, as lack of movement inhibits the flow of blood in the veins, increasing blood pressure and the occurrence of blood clots.

Signs and symptoms of a deep vein thrombosis may include:

  • Swelling
  • Pain
  • Warm skin
  • Tenderness
  • Redness, particularly at the back of the leg, below the knee

If you’ve developed a deep vein thrombosis, prompt medical treatment is necessary because these types of clots often travel to the lungs, resulting in a pulmonary embolism. Deep vein thrombosis can be treated with anti-clotting drugs. If a person is at risk of developing a clot, the doctor may recommend that the patient wear compression stockings to reduce blood pressure in the legs.
