New research suggests the antipsychotic drug Risperdal (risperidone) may not be effective at treating certain symptoms of autism. Lawsuits filed against Risperdal’s manufacturer, Johnson & Johnson, allege that the drug can cause breast development in boys and young men, a condition called gynecomastia.

What’s the Problem?
The decade-long study, which was published in the November 2014 edition of the Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology, looked at 184 children who had autism, 50 of whom had been treated with Risperdal. As the study was drawing to a close, parents of 33 patients reported improvements in irritability, aggression and anxiety. However, no changes were reported in the children’s autism symptoms, such as social impairments, communication deficits and repetitive behavior. The study’s authors recommended that autistic children treated with Risperdal should be periodically re-evaluated, especially considering the potential side effects associated with the drug.
Status of Risperdal Lawsuits
More than 1,000 Risperdal lawsuits are currently pending in a mass tort litigation in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas, according to court documents. All of the complaints were filed on behalf of individuals who allegedly suffered serious side effects related to its use, in most cases gynecomastia. The suits allege, among other things, that J&J and its subsidiary, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, improperly marketed Risperdal for “off-label” pediatric uses, including the treatment of autism before it was approved for that purpose in 2006. The companies have also been accused of failing to warn that Risperdal may increase users’ levels of prolactin, a hormone that causes female breast growth and lactation. The Risperdal mass tort is: In Re: Risperdal Litigation, Case Number 100300296.
