What’s the Problem?
Risperdal gynecomastia treatments and drugs typically include a combination of:
- Prescription drugs – Medications such as tamoxifen and raloxifene may be prescribed to men with gynecomastia. Although these medications are approved by the FDA for the treatment of breast cancer, they have not been approved to treat gynecomastia. Prescribing them for this purpose is considered ‘off-label’, and is done so at the doctor’s discretion.
- Surgical intervention – If drugs are unable to treat Risperdal gynecomastia, surgery may be performed. Gynecomastia surgery may include a liposuction procedure, where the breast fat is taken out, or a complete mastectomy, where the breast gland tissue is extracted. Fortunately, mastectomies are minimally invasive and require smaller incisions.
- Discontinuing Risperdal – If Risperdal has been found to be the likely cause of gynecomastia, discontinuing treatment with the drug in favor of another medication with fewer potential side effects may be recommended.
In patients whose cause of gynecomastia cannot be conclusively determined, regular check-ups may be advised to see if the condition goes away on its own. Gynecomastia often resolves by itself over time. If, however, the condition does not go away, prescription drugs or surgery may be necessary.
