What’s the Problem?
For the study, which was titled Risperidone and Risk of Gynecomastia in Young Men (PDF), a research team from the University of British Columbia looked at a database of over 400,000 males between the ages of 15 and 25. They found that Risperdal users were 4 times more likely to develop gynecomastia than non-users (RR = 3.91, 95% CI = 2.01–7.62), and that children and adolescents who took the drug were 5 times more likely to have the condition (RR = 5.44, 95% CI = 1.50–19.74).
“Our study showed a strong association between risperidone use and gynecomastia in young adult males, Clinicians who are prescribing risperidone to this demographic may need to consider this adverse event in their therapeutic decision-making process,” the researchers concluded. The findings were published in the August 2015 online edition of the Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology.
National Health Claim Review Finds Older Men at Risk for Risperdal Gynecomastia
Last year, data from a review of national health claims found that older men had a 69% increased risk of being diagnosed with gynecomastia if they took Risperdal. That study, also conducted at the University of British Columbia, looked at data on one million American men. The findings were presented at the 2014 Annual Meeting for the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry (AAGP).
Gynecomastia Risks Hidden by Janssen
While recent studies have confirmed the link between Risperdal use and abnormal breast growth in males, there is evidence to suggest that the manufacturer knew the risks much earlier. In fact, a recent article published in Forbes stated that a 2003 study found a direct link between Risperdal use and an increase in prolactin levels and the onset of gynecomastia. However, according to a lawsuit filed on behalf of an autistic man who grew size 46DD breasts after taking Risperdal as a child, these findings were left out of a publication, leaving doctors and patients in the dark about the drug’s potential risks.
Status of Risperdal Litigation
There are currently over 1,400 Risperdal lawsuits consolidated for pretrial handling in the First Judicial District of Pennsylvania. In addition to alleging that plaintiffs developed gynecomastia after taking Risperdal, the men in these complaints allege that Janssen failed to warn about the risks associated with the drug.
