Recent studies have found that Risperdal may cause gynecomastia, a condition that occurs when boys and young men experience abnormal swelling of their breast tissues. Risperdal increases the level of prolactin in the human body, a hormone that stimulates milk production. Normally only found in high levels in nursing mothers, elevated prolactin levels can cause breast budding, breast growth, and even milk production in boys and young men.

How Can Risperdal Cause Gynecomastia?
Despite not being listed as a potential complication of the drug, Risperdal has recently been associated with gynecomastia. Though the exact mechanisms by which this occurs are still not fully understood by the medical community, gynecomastia is thought to result from elevated levels of prolactin caused by the use of Risperdal (generic: risperidone), an FDA-approved drug prescribed to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Risperdal has also been approved for the treatment of irritability caused by autism in children as young as five.
In a number of different Risperdal studies, nearly 90% of patients aged 5-17 had elevated levels of prolactin 60 days after starting the drug. In a study involving 1,885 test subjects under the age of 18, 43 were diagnosed with abnormal breast tissue. In other research involving children taking Risperdal, more than 2% developed gynecomastia and 0.8% began lactating.
Abnormally high prolactin levels have also been found to cause the suppression of the gonadotropin releasing hormone GnRH, which means that Risperdal users face an increased risk of having their sex hormones suppressed. This complication may inhibit the future ability to procreate, and may lead to a delayed onset of puberty. Additionally, decreased levels of GnRH have been linked to low testosterone and delayed secondary sex traits including facial and body hair growth, increased musculature, genital enlargement, and voice deepening.
