What’s the Problem?
September 21, 2017 – Renthal has received at least 22 reports of the handlebars cracking, according to a Recall Notice issued by the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) [1].
“Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) is defined as a corrosion attack which can occur under the simultaneous influence of mechanical “tensile” stresses and a corrosive environment,” Renthal said in a press release [2]. “The presence of only one of these factors does not induce crack propagation but when combined they occasionally can.”
The worldwide recall affects all Gen 1 and Gen 2 motorcycle clip-on aluminum handlebars for motorcycles distributed or sold for use on non-public roads.
Gen 1 handlebars have a golden 40 mm tube with a black clamp and texturized gray end cover. “Renthal” and adjustability markings are etched on the tube and on the clamp. Gen 1 model numbers include:
- CL100
- CL101
- CL102
- CL103
- CL104
Gen 2 handlebars have a silver 20 mm tube with a black tip on one end and a two-screw clamp on the other end. Renthal is printed on the clamp. Gen 2 model numbers include:
- CL105
- CL106
- CL107
- CL108
- CL109
The recalled products were sold at Renthal motorcycle dealers across the U.S. from April 2009 through July 2017 for about $215.
If you purchased a set of recalled handlebars, you should contact Renthal for free replacement grips.
