What’s the problem?

November 29, 2016 – The patient, a 57-year-old man with a history of high blood pressure, reported consuming an 8 oz. bottle of Redline energy about 15 minutes before suffering a brain bleed that caused tingling and shakiness in his arms and legs. He was transferred to the UAB Comprehensive Stroke Center from a local hospital emergency room.

Made by Vital Pharmaceuticals (VPX), Redline is marketed as a workout aide and fat burner. The product’s labeling contains a warning only to drink half a bottle at a time; however, many consumers have failed to either read or follow the warning, and have ended up in the hospital as a result. Considered by Caffeine Informer to be possibly the most powerful energy drink currently on the U.S. market, Redline Energy has a history of sending people to emergency rooms.

“This particular drink contains several supplements for which we have little understanding of their potential interactions with each other or with caffeine,” said Dr. Anand Venkatraman of UAB’s Department of Neurology and lead author of a study published in the American Journal of Emergency Medicine. “One is structurally similar to amphetamines, and several are known to stimulate the sympathetic nervous system.”

The patient’s history of high blood pressure also likely put him at increased risk for stroke, according to Venkatraman. For a patient with pre-existing warning signs for vascular disease, this increase in blood pressure could be dangerous, as a rise in blood pressure can affect an already weakened blood vessel to the point that it ruptures.

In March 2015, VPX reached a settlement with 2 people who claim they were injured by Redline Energy Drink, according to Law360. Plaintiff Adam Mirabella claimed that Redline is “unfit for human consumption” after allegedly experiencing chest pain, lost sensation in his hands and extreme nausea requiring hospitalization. The case was settled out of court after being denied class action certification.
