RAM Trucks Recalled for Steering, Brake Pedal Problems

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) is recalling about 882,000 RAM pickup trucks worldwide due to problems with steering, brake pedals. At least 1 injury and 8 accidents linked to the problems, according to U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

February 6, 2019 – Fiat’s announcement involves 2 separate recalls: the first for 660,000 RAM 3500 pickups from model years 2013-2017, RAM 2500 trucks from 2014-2017, and 3500 chassis cabs. This recall was issued following an investigation by the automaker which found that a bad configuration could prevent drivers from steering the vehicle.

Fiat also recalled another 220,000 RAM 1500 trucks with adjustable pedals from model year 2019 after it was found that certain adjustments may cause the brake pedals to detach during use.

Update: Exploding ARC Airbag Injures Driver as Questions Loom re. Investigation into Faulty Inflators

February 21, 2019 – More than 4 years after the NHTSA committed to an investigation into why exploding airbag inflators made by ARC Automotive of Tennessee were causing severe injuries and even deaths, new casualties are being reported with little to no progress by government investigators. The most recent injury linked to an exploding ARC inflator occurred in a General Motors vehicle. As a result of the incident, the automaker announced it would recall 1,145 Chevrolet Malibu sedans from model years 2010 and 2011.

What’s the problem?

In addition to the above actions, FCA has issued several large recalls for its automobiles in recent years. In 2017, the Italian automaker called back 1.3 million vehicles worldwide to fix defective airbags and to repair anti-lock brakes.

Last year, Fiat recalled about 1.1 million pickup trucks in the U.S. to fix a defect that could cause their tailgates to fly open while being driven.
