What’s the problem?
November 4, 2011 - The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) announced today that Quirch Foods Co. is recalling all lots of the following product because it may be contaminated with Clostridium Botulinum spores:
- Leslie Leger and Sons Ltd. brand, Salted Smoked Split Herring, Plant Reg # 2406, Producer: Leslie Leger and Sons LTD, Cap Pele, NB, Canada
The product in question was distributed in 18lb wooden boxes (40-60 count) to supermarkets and distributors in Florida, Georgia, Puerto Rico, and Nassau BF. This recall was initiated after a routine sample collected by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets found the product to be uneviscerated. To date, no illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall.
The FDA is warning consumers not to eat any herring products included in this recall, even if it does not look or smell spoiled, and to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Distributors have been advised to notify customers and to return any product in their possession to the manufacturer.
Botulism Food Poisoning
Clostridium Botulinum spores can lead to botulism, a potentially deadly foodborne illness. Botulism food poisoning typically affects children, the elderly, and those with otherwise compromised immune systems. Signs and symptoms may include:
- general weakness
- double vision
- trouble with speech / swallowing / breathing
- weakness of other muscles
- abdominal distention
