What’s the problem?
June 15, 2011 – The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) reports that the recalled fresh Spanish-style cheese is sold in 5-pound foil tray packages with a label declaring a plant number of 36-9845 and a product lot code of 05/31/11 affixed to the bottom of the packages. ‘Quesos CentroAmericano Corp.’ is printed on the front of the packages. The recalled product was distributed to stores, delis and restaurants throughout Long Island.
A routine sample of the cheese taken by an inspector from the Department’s Division of Milk Control and Dairy Services discovered it to be contaminated with high levels of Staphylococcus aureus. The manufacturer was notified on June 13, and the recall was subsequently initiated. Consumers who have purchased specified lots of the Queso Fresco product should discard it immediately or return it to the company for a full refund.
Staph food poisoning is an illness that results from eating food contaminated with Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Contamination often occurs when a food handler comes into contact with food products that are served at room or refrigerator temperature. Symptoms of foodborne staph infection come from toxins the bacteria releases into food, and include:
- explosive vomiting
- abdominal pain
Among the predominant bacteria involved in food poisoning outbreaks, Staphylococcus aureus is a leading cause of gastroenteritis resulting from the consumption of contaminated food. The best treatment for individuals diagnosed with staph infection is rest, plenty of fluids, and medication to calm their stomachs. Highly susceptible patients – such as the young, elderly, and those with compromised immune systems – are more likely to have severe illness requiring intravenous therapy and care in a hospital.
