Proscar, a drug used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men with an enlarged prostate, has been linked to the development of gynecomastia. This condition refers to the development of breasts in men, and occurs when excessive tissue accumulates in the pectoral region. Symptoms of Proscar-induced gynecomastia include unusual pain, tenderness, and sensitivity in the breast.

What is Proscar?
Manufactured by Merck & Co., Proscar (generic: finasteride) is prescribed for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate). The drug works by blocking the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which can reduce the size of the prostate gland. Proscar belongs to a class of drugs called type II 5α-reductase inhibitors, which also includes Propecia.
How Can Proscar Cause Gynecomastia?
Because it blocks the conversion of testosterone to DHT, Proscar can have a profound influence on the entire endocrine system. The resulting hormonal imbalance can increase the risk of gynecomastia and other serious side effects.
Gynecomastia results from an imbalance of estrogen and testosterone. The condition can affect one or both breasts, often times unevenly. Newborns, adolescent boys and young men may develop symptoms of gynecomastia as a result of normal changes in their hormones. However, it is also believed that the changes in testosterone, brought on by the use of Proscar, may result in the condition as well.

While gynecomastia is not life-threatening, it can be emotionally devastating. Feelings of shame, embarrassment and humiliation are common in those with the condition. The presence of male breasts or “man boobs” makes it difficult for men of all ages to feel not only masculine, but secure with their own body.
