Unaware of Sexual Side Effects, Pro Soccer Player Took Propecia to Stop Hair Loss

Wayne Rooney, a 26-year-old striker for the English Premier League Manchester United soccer team, recently admitted to taking Merck’s controversial hair loss drug Propecia (generic: finasteride) in 2009 after being teased and taunted repeatedly about his receding hairline. Unfortunately, since Rooney began taking Propecia, the drug has been increasingly linked to a large number of serious sexual side effects including impotence, erectile dysfunction, and ejaculation disorders. Recent studies suggest that these complications may continue indefinitely, for months or even years after patients discontinue treatment with Propecia.

What’s the problem?

Needless to say, professional footballer Wayne Rooney was more than a little concerned when he found out that the widely-prescribed hair loss drug he was taking had been linked to a large number of serious, potentially irreversible sexual side effects.

A recent study conducted by researchers at the Center for Andrology and Division of Endocrinology at The George Washington University analyzed the effects of Propecia on 71 otherwise healthy men between the ages of 21 and 46. After using the drug, the test subjects reported developing a number of adverse sexual complications that continued for months, even after they quit taking Propecia. Specifically:

  • 94% developed low libido;
  • 92% developed erectile dysfunction;
  • 92% experienced decreased sexual arousal;
  • 69% developed problems having an orgasm;
  • the average number of sexual episodes per month dropped from 25.8 to 8.8;
  • the total sexual dysfunction score on a standardized test scale increased before and after using Propecia.

The average duration of these sexual side effects was 20 months, with approximately 20% of the test subjects suffering from complications that lasted six years or more.

In April 2012, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) ordered Merck to update Propecia warning labels to include information about persistent decreased libido, ejaculation and orgasm disorders, as well mention reports of male infertility and poor semen quality. In a press release regarding the label changes, the FDA stated that the complications were experienced by approximately 3.8% of users, compared to just 2.1% who received a placebo in a controlled clinical trial.

A growing number of Propecia lawsuits are being filed against Merck in courthouses around the country, alleging that the company failed to adequately warn the public about the risks associated with its blockbuster hair loss treatment. Many of the plaintiffs have suggested that if they had been made aware of these potential complications, they would have never taken the drug in the first place.
