The heartburn medication Prevacid (generic: lansoprazole) has been linked to acute interstitial nephritis (AIN), a complication in which the spaces between the kidney tubules become inflamed or swollen.

What’s the Problem?
Only a handful of cases of acute interstitial nephritis have been specifically linked to Prevacid in the medical literature. However, the drug belongs to a class of medications called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) which have been increasingly associated with the condition in recent years.
One report of AIN linked to Prevacid was that of an elderly woman who was hospitalized with non-specific conditions after taking the medication for 45 days. She recovered after quitting the drug and being treated with corticosteroids. The researchers cautioned that acute interstitial nephritis associated with proton pump inhibitors should be given special consideration considering the medications’ widespread usage.
What is AIN?
Acute interstitial nephritis occurs when the spaces between the kidney tubules become inflamed or swollen. The condition is usually temporary; however, it can lead to more severe problems such as kidney failure (end-stage renal disease or ERSD) if left untreated.
Signs and symptoms of acute interstitial nephritis may include:
- Blood in the urine
- Increased or decreased urine output
- Drowsiness or confusion
- Swelling of the body
- Weight gain from retaining fluid
What Causes Nephritis?
There are many potential causes of acute interstitial nephritis; however, side effects of proton pump inhibitors have been increasingly associated with the condition as the drugs have become more widely used. According to research published in the journal BMC Nephrology, numerous studies and biopsy-confirmed case reports have suggested a link between PPIs and AIN. Additionally, in 2006 NEJM Journal Watch released information about a case series and literature review which identified an association between all commercially available proton pump inhibitors and the development of acute interstitial nephritis. Although many of those patients fully recovered, some suffered permanent kidney damage.
Prevacid Side Effects
In addition to being linked to an increased risk for acute interstitial nephritis, Prevacid may cause the following serious side effects in certain users:
- Acute kidney injury
- Chronic kidney disease (CKD)
- Kidney failure (end-stage renal disease or ERSD)
- Cardiac disorders
- Heart attack
- Bone fractures (hip fracture, wrist fracture, spine fracture)
- Broken bones
- Low magnesium levels (hypomagnesemia)
- Gut infections
- Clostridium difficile infection
- Community-acquired pneumonia
- Erectile dysfunction (ED)
- Severe allergic reactions
- And more
