What’s the problem?
April 27, 2012 – According to a statement released this week by Boehringer, Pradaxa sales exceeded $1 billion for the 12 month period ending in February 2012.
The pharmaceutical giant has aggressively marketed Pradaxa as a superior alternative to warfarin, claiming that the drug requires less overall patient monitoring. However, within months of Pradaxa’s approval by the FDA, hundreds of internal bleeding complaints involving the drug were filed with the administration’s adverse event reporting system (AERS).
According to a January 2012 report published by the Institute for Safe Medication Practices, more bleeding complications were associated with Pradaxa than with any other drug monitored by the group. At least 505 internal bleeding events were linked to the drug, compared to just 176 cases reported with warfarin, which came in second on the list.
While it is true that Pradaxa requires less monitoring than warfarin, the drug is unable to be counteracted when internal bleeding events occur. With warfarin, bleeding can be stopped with a single dose of vitamin K. There is no such quick fix with Pradaxa.
Yet despite the hundreds of deaths and internal bleeding complications associated with the drug, Boehringer has boasted that Pradaxa is “among the most successful market introductions in the pharmaceutical industry in the past few years.”
However, a growing number of Pradaxa lawsuits are being filed in courthouses around the country on behalf of patients who have allegedly been injured or died after taking the drug. The vast majority of the complaints allege that Boehringer introduced Pradaxa without adequately warning the public about the inherent risks associated with using the drug.
