What’s the problem?
April 6, 2012 – According to a report released earlier this week by the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP), during the second quarter of 2011, Pradaxa was linked to:
- 856 reports of serious, disabling or fatal injury
- 117 patients deaths
- 511 internal bleeding events
Due to these shockingly high numbers, Pradaxa currently holds the title of being associated with more reported adverse events than any other monitored drug, even though it had only been on the market for less than a year at the time of the reporting.
The ISMP was careful to point out that anticoagulant drugs constitute the highest risk out of any medication. Coumadin (generic: warfarin), which Pradaxa was designed to replace, accounts for nearly one-third of all emergency hospitalizations for drug side effects among elderly individuals.
Pradaxa was introduced as a superior alternative to warfarin for the prevention of strokes among patients with atrial fibrillations. It is the first to hit the market from a new class of medications known as ‘direct thrombin inhibitors,’ which block an enzyme that causes blood to clot. In theory, these new drugs are superior to warfarin because they require substantially less monitoring. However, warfarin patients suffering from internal bleeding can be counteracted with a dose of Vitamin K, while Pradaxa and other direct thrombin inhibitors do not possess this same quick fix.
While many doctors have begun to favor Pradaxa because it requires fewer followup visits from patients, concerns have recently been raised about the drug’s link to overdoses, hemorrhages, and internal bleeding events. These concerns have been serious enough to warrant safety investigations in the U.S., Canada and Europe. Additionally, a growing number of Pradaxa lawsuits have been filed in courthouses around the country. These complaints allege that Boehringer was negligent in failing to adequately research Pradaxa, and warn the public about the serious and potentially life-threatening complications that had been associated with the drug.
