September 29, 2012 – According to the results of a new study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, the risk of uncontrollable internal bleeding events with Pradaxa and other newer-generation blood thinners may cancel out any possible health benefit offered by the drugs.

For the new report, European researchers conducted a seven-study meta analysis of internal bleeding episodes linked to blood-thinning medications known as Xa inhibitors and direct thrombin inhibitors. The team analyzed databases of research conducted on individuals who were treated with these types of drugs after suffering acute coronary syndrome (ACS), and looked at placebo-controlled clinical trials that included more than 30,000 test subjects. The researchers ultimately identified a three-fold risk of internal bleeding events, but only marginal reductions in the risk of additional heart problems and no tangible benefit for the patient in terms of overall long-term survival outlook.
“For the net clinical benefit, treatment with new-generation oral anticoagulant agents provided no advantage over placebo,” the authors of the report concluded. “The use of anti-Xa or direct thrombin inhibitors is associated with a dramatic increase in major bleeding events, which might offset all ischemic benefits in patients receiving antiplatelet therapy after an ACS.”
Of all the direct thrombin inhibitors currently available, Boehringer Ingelheim’s Pradaxa (generic: dabigatran) is by far the most widely-prescribed. Yet despite being on the market for less than three years, serious concerns have been raised over the risk of internal bleeding problems with the drug, which have resulted in a large number of deaths and other catastrophic injuries.
As a result of these complications, a growing number of Pradaxa lawsuits are being filed in courthouses around the country on behalf of individuals who have been severely injured or killed after being treated with the drug. While there are only about 50 Pradaxa lawsuits currently pending on the federal level, industry insiders have predicted that this number will grow significantly in the near future. All federal Pradaxa lawsuits have been consolidated into a multidistrict litigation (MDL) before Judge David R. Herndon in the Southern District of Illinois for pretrial handling.
