What’s the problem?
April 30, 2012 – The Pradaxa lawsuit was filed earlier this month in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Tennessee on behalf of the Estate of Gertrude Eubanks, who died from internal bleeding complications on April 4, just days after beginning treatment with the drug.
Although Pradaxa was marketed by Boehringer as easier to use than warfarin because it supposedly requires less patient monitoring, the drug does not have a reversal agent that can be used when internal bleeding events occur. With warfarin, bleeding can be counteracted with a single dose of vitamin K.
In recent months, the controversy surrounding Pradaxa has grown as hundreds of adverse event reports have been filed with the FDA involving hemorrhages, internal bleeding, and death due to the lack of antidote.
According to a newly-released report by the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP), more bleeding events were connected with Pradaxa during the first quarter of 2011 than with any other drug monitored by the group. In that short time, at least 505 instances of internal bleeding were reported among Pradaxa users, compared to just 176 cases reported with warfarin, which came in second on the list.
Considering the large number of complications that have been associated with Pradaxa, investigations into the drug’s safety and efficacy are now being conducted in the U.S. by the FDA, as well as in the European Union (EU) and Canada.
In addition to the recent Pradaxa internal bleeding death lawsuit filed in Tennessee, a growing number of similar claims have been filed in courthouses around the country in recent months. The complaints allege that Boehringer failed to adequately research its drug, and that it promoted it as a safe alternative to warfarin, even though the company failed to provide warnings about the lack of an antidote.
