What Causes Legionnaires’ Disease?

Legionella is a naturally-occurring bacterium typically found in freshwater environments such as lakes and streams, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The bacteria only becomes a health threat when it grows and spreads into water systems such as:

  • Showerheads
  • Sink faucets
  • Cooling towers
  • Hot tubs
  • Decorative fountains / water features
  • Hot water tanks and heaters
  • Large plumbing systems

Signs and Symptoms

Symptoms of Legionnaires’ disease may include:

  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fever
  • Muscle aches
  • Headaches
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Confusion

Symptoms typically begin 2 to 10 days after being exposed to the bacteria, but it can take longer so people should watch for symptoms for about 2 weeks after exposure.
