Millions of young men around the country have based their decision to take the hair loss treatment drugs Propecia and Proscar on advice from their doctors, clinical trials conducted by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), and Merck’s medical literature which states that any side effects experienced while on the drugs should resolve themselves after discontinuing treatment. Unfortunately, this has not been the case for a large number of men who continue to suffer from devastating mental, physical and sexual side effects from finasteride. What follows is a brief overview of the drug’s undisclosed mechanisms, potential dangers, and an introduction to the Post-Finasteride Syndrome.

What’s the Problem with Finasteride?
It’s a frightening fact that the vast majority of the medical community is still unaware that finasteride has the potential to leave men with an endocrine system crash, loss of androgenic action, and a large number of other severe side effects. It is still not widely understood why after quitting hair loss treatment drugs like Propecia and Proscar, those with persistent complications often find their testosterone, LH and FSH dropping to drastically low levels, all the while acquiring a rarely-reported form of secondary hypogonadism.
To date, there have been no adequate scientific tests conducted on the Post-Finasteride Syndrome phenomenon. A growing number of former Propecia and Proscar users have called for a comprehensive clinical study comparing victims of sexual side effects to a control group from the general population to determine the root cause of finasteride’s tendency to cause long-term complications. The ultimate goal of such a study would be to find a cure for Post-Finasteride Syndrome, once and for all.
Post-Finasteride Syndrome Overview
Post-Finasteride Syndrome typically manifests itself through the following sequential progression:
- Most side effects tend to resolve themselves within 10 to 20 days after discontinuing treatment with finasteride. During this time, 5AR2 enzyme activity/DHT return to ‘normal’ levels. This is followed by:
- a catastrophic endocrine system crash, which is characterized by testosterone, LH and FSH hormones dropping to hypogonadal levels. A number of other severe imbalances typically accompany the crash including elevated estradiaol, TSH, Prolactin and SHBG, as well as below range 3a-diol-G and Vitamin D levels. These events are followed by:
- the immediate onset of a hypogonadal symptomatic profile, followed by:
- long-term complications with little to no overall improvement, even years after discontinuing treatment with finasteride.
Taking this progression into consideration, it appears that Post-Finasteride Syndrome is a permanent clinical condition which does not resolve itself, even after the patient quits the drug. The syndrome is typically accompanied by secondary hypogonadism and post-drug loss of androgenic action, which remain remarkably resistant to widely-used hormonal treatments.
What Causes Post-Finasteride Syndrome?
The central dilemma is that nobody knows for sure why Post-Finasteride Syndrome occurs. Leading scientific researchers from a variety of disciplines have acknowledged that the specific mechanism through which the drug causes sexual side effects is currently unknown, and that more in-depth research on the topic will be required to identify the root of the problem. Once the question of what causes Post-Finasteride Syndrome is answered, we will be able to determine who may be most susceptible to such side effects, and subsequently develop effective treatments or a cure to permanently restore affected patients’ proper health.
