Listeriosis is a foodborne illness caused by ingesting `the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes, according to the World Health Organization WHO). The bacteria is commonly found in nature, and only becomes a problem to humans when it gets inside them. Signs and symptoms may take anywhere from several hours up to 70 days after consuming the offending product, which makes accurate diagnosis very difficult. When they do present, however, symptoms of listeria may include:

  • muscle aches
  • fever
  • flu-like symptoms
  • nausea
  • diarrhea
