What’s the problem?
July 28, 2010 – Barely halfway through the summer swimming season, there have been reports of more than 210 child drowning and non-fatal submersion incidents in pools and spas around the country. In an effort to reduce these preventable incidents, the CPSC and partners Safe Kids USA and the National Drowning Prevention Alliance (NDPA) joined forces to introduce a new kids safety education program. The centerpieces of the program are a multi-part educational video and an online activity, which are part of CPSC’s national ‘Pool Safely’ campaign.
The educational video highlights individual experiences and uses seven simple pool safety steps to encourage safe and responsible behavior in and around pools and spas. The interactive online activity is designed for parents and young children. It highlights unsafe behaviors around the pool in a variety of real-world settings such as backyard, hotel and community pools. Game players are encouraged to identify the trouble spots and behaviors. The online activity is aimed at children seven and under and will be available for play on the Pool Safely website and on the websites of the NDPA and Safe Kids.
The Pool Safely campaign is CPSC’s national information and education program designed to raise public awareness, support industry compliance with safety standards, and improve safety at pools and spas. The campaign was launched in Fort Lauderdale, Florida prior to Memorial Day.
Swimming Pool Drowning Update 9/13/12: The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a press release today stating that at least 137 children under the age of 15 drowned in a pool or spa during the summer 2012 season, which began on Memorial Day (May 28) and ended on Labor Day (Sept. 3). In addition to the fatalities, another 168 children required emergency medical treatment for accidents that occurred in pools and spas during that period. Click here to learn more.
