What’s the problem?
Permax is a dopamine receptor agonist manufactured by Eli Lilly and Co. used to manage symptoms of Parkinson's disease, which affects nearly 1.5 million people nationwide. Individuals with Parkinson's suffer from a shortage of the neurotransmitter dopamine, which disrupts the messages sent from the brain to the body. Permax is designed to help make up for the lack of natural dopamine, easing the tremors associated with the disorder. Unfortunately, mounting evidence and numerous case studies have confirmed that Permax side effects could lead to valvular heart disease, heart failure and even death.
Valvular Heart Disease Signs & Symptoms
Research suggests that the risk of valvular heart disease caused by Permax may be extremely high. In January 2006, two studies were published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) reporting that nearly one quarter (25%) of Parkinson's patients taking Permax had moderate to severe heart valve problems including valvular heart disease. In fact, Permax users were 5 to 7 times more likely to have leaky heart valves than those on other types of Parkinson's medications. Signs and symptoms of Permax-induced valvular heart disease include (but are not limited to):
- chest pain or pressure
- heart palpitations
- shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- rapid weight gain
- swelling of the feet or ankles
