What’s the Problem?

This recall affects Perfect Descent Auto Belay model 220 Indoor, Outdoor, Speed Drive and Direct Drive auto belay climbing devices, according to a CPSC Recall Notice [1].

The recalled belays can loosen and cause slack on the rope, allowing the climber to fall, CPSC said. Climbing while tethered to a malfunctioning belay can cause serious bodily injury, including death.

Perfect Descent Belay Devices are used with climbing ropes to protect the climber while climbing, to stop a fall while being lowered on the rope.

The recalled belays were sold online and at Aerial Adventure Technologies stores nationwide from February 2017 through April 2019 for $1,800 and $2,100, CPSC said. Affected devices are yellow and black, and have “Perfect Descent” printed on top of the belay.

If you purchased a Perfect Descent Belay that is affected by this recall, you should stop using it immediately and contact C3 Manufacturing for information about how to obtain a free repair. This recall began on March 19, 2020.

How Safe are Auto Belays?

The CPSC specifies that auto belays must adhere to the same stringent safety standards as any other personal protective equipment (PPE). All auto belays must also undergo annual maintenance by manufacturer-approved service facilities. Additionally, auto-belay operators must inspect each device as specified in the operator manual on a regular basis.

It is important that individual climbers are aware of the potential risks of climbing with auto belays because often they fail to employ the partner-check system.

The most important thing to remember is always to clip in. Even though it might seem clear, most auto belay accidents occur when climbers fail to clip in before beginning their ascent.

Regardless of your climbing experience, clipping in should be every auto-belay user’s top priority. Never, ever, ever forget to clip in.
