May 30, 2012 – Four of Jerry Sandusky’s accusers have made formal requests for anonymity during the upcoming child sex abuse trial, which is currently scheduled to begin June 5. The disgraced former Penn State assistant football coach attended a closed-door meeting with judge John Cleland on Tuesday, a day before what could be the final hearing before the start of the trial. Sandusky, 68, faces 52 criminal counts related to the sexual abuse of at least 10 boys over a period of 15 years.

Sandusky, a 68-year-old retired defense coach who was once considered to be next in line to take over Paterno’s job, showed little emotion as he was found guilty of 45 of 48 counts. What’s the problem?

The topic of yesterday’s meeting is still unclear, and participants – which included Sandusky’s lawyer and prosecutors – declined to comment when asked for details. Judge Cleland has yet to rule on a defense request to have the case thrown out, and jury selection is set to begin next week.

During the meeting, lawyers for Victims 3, 5 and 7 issued formal motions to prevent their names from being released to the public, saying disclosure would cause their clients unnecessary fear, anxiety and mental anguish. Lawyers for Victim 4 requested that an alias be used to address him during the trial.

Sandusky’s lawyers have indicated that they are not opposed to the motion for anonymity, but they have yet to hear back from prosecutors in the case. Messages left for a spokesman for the attorney general’s office have not been returned.

To date, at least three of Sandusky’s accusers have filed legal claims or notices they intend to sue, with each naming his charity organization The Second Mile as a defendant. Although the actual number of accusers is still uncertain, court documents suggest there may be upwards of 17 alleged victims in the case.
