Most people with salmonella have diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramps and other symptoms within hours of infection. In severe cases, the infection may spread into the bloodstream, damaging organs unless the person is treated with antibiotics.
Children, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems are the most likely to get salmonella food poisoning, also known as salmonellosis. It is estimated that about 400 people die from the illness each year in the U.S.
