May 18, 2018 - The scandal erupted after it was found that Clinical Pathologies Laboratories mistakenly cleared 208 women who had early signs of malignancies between 2010 and 2014, according to the Houston Chronicle. These women received free cervical screenings through an Irish government program that contracted with CPL to evaluate its tests.

What’s the Problem?
The issue of false negative pap smear results first came to light with the case of Vicky Phelan, a 43-year-old Irish woman who is now dying from cervical cancer. Phelan received free cervical screenings through an Irish government program that, like Baylor University, contracted with Clinical Pathologies Laboratories to assess its tests.
Phelan’s 2011 pap smear came back negative, according to The New York Times, with a second test in 2014 reading positive, prompting a review of the earlier test.
As it turns out, Phelan’s first test “strongly indicated the presence of cancer,” which she learned about in September 2017. Four months later, she was given 6 months to 1 year to live, the Times reports.
Last week, CPL settled with Phelan for about $3 million. Ireland’s clinical director of the screening program resigned last week, and the government announced on Monday launched an investigation into the matter. Irish officials said at least 17 of the 208 women mistakenly cleared by CPL have since died.
