Panera Sued by New Jersey Women Alleging E. Coli from Contaminated Salads

July 18, 2018 - At least 2 women have filed lawsuits against Panera alleging they developed severe E. coli infections after eating salads that contained tainted romaine lettuce which were purchased at Panera restaurants in New Jersey. Defendants in the cases include the Panera Bread Company, the firm that supplied the lettuce, and other unnamed entities.

What’s the Problem?

January 23, 2018 - Panera said it made the decision to issue the recall "out of an abundance of caution" after routine sampling found evidence of listeria in one of its cream cheese varieties, according to National Public Radio (NPR).

“Only one variety of 2-oz cream cheese from a single day yielded the positive result,” said Blaine Hurst, president and CEO of Panera Bread. “Our intent is to go above and beyond for our guests. You should expect nothing less from Panera.”

Listeria food poisoning, also known as listeriosis, is caused by an infection by the Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. It is a rare, but lethal, type of food poisoning with a mortality rate of 25%. The ingestion of as little as a thousand cells of the Listeria monocytogenes bacteria can cause the illness.

Signs and symptoms of listeriosis include:

  • High fever
  • Headache
  • Stiffness
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea

However, if the illness spreads to the nervous system, signs and symptoms of listeriosis may include:

  • Headache
  • Stiff neck
  • Confusion / changes in alertness
  • Loss of balance
  • Convulsions

The recall affects Panera Bread cafes in the U.S. only. Customers who purchased the exact same cream cheese in Canada and elsewhere can continue to spread and dip as they wish.
