October 1, 2013 – The Hawaii State Department of Health has confirmed that at least 32 new cases of liver failure have been linked to OxyElite Pro (OEP), a controversial pre-workout and weight loss dietary supplement. As a result of these events, the Department of Health sent out an alert to medical professionals around the country requesting that doctors and dietitians report any patients suffering from liver conditions who were taking OxyElite Pro or other similar dietary supplements. The active ingredient in OEP, dimethylamylamine (DMAA), has recently been linked to heart attacks, heat strokes, seizures, liver failure, and death.
OxyElite Pro Lawsuit Update 4/16/14: Earlier this month, a panel of federal judges denied a motion by the makers of OxyElite Pro and Jack3d to transfer and consolidate a number of products liability lawsuits to federal court in Philadelphia. The litigation contends that the supplements contained altered ingredients that were unsafe and unapproved by the FDA, leading to a nationwide hepatitis outbreak. Click here to learn more.

What’s the Problem?
Of the 32 new liver failure cases linked to OxyElite Pro in Hawaii, at least one individual has been required to undergo a liver transplant, two others are on the transplant list, and more could be added to the list in the near future. All of the patients were reportedly healthy before taking OxyElite Pro.
“That’s the scary, or worrisome thing, ” says Hawaii State Epidemiologist Sarah Park. “They were previously healthy.”
Dr. Park says she expects the number of reports of liver failure associated with OxyElite Pro and other similar supplements to grow significantly now that the alert has gone out. The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are reportedly working together with the Hawaii State Department of health to investigate the problem.
DMAA Likely Culprit in HI Liver Failure Cases
Dimethylamylamine (DMAA) is the main active ingredient contained in OxyElite Pro, and is designed to provide users with increased workout intensity, focus, and energy. However, over the past several years, DMAA has come under scrutiny by federal health authorities due to its potential to cause life-threatening complications. The most serious side effects reported in OxyElite Pro users include:
- Irregular heartbeat
- Heart attack
- Liver damage or liver failure
- Kidney damage or kidney failure
- Psychiatric side effects
- Elevated blood pressure
- Sudden cardiac death
Deaths Linked to OxyElite Pro
In February 2012, the U.S. military banned sales of DMAA-containing dietary supplements on government owned facilities following the deaths of two soldiers. The previous summer, a 22-year-old soldier collapsed and died while running at a Southwestern U.S. military base. Three months later, a 32-year-old soldier collapsed while exercising, and died after a month in the hospital. Both soldiers were subsequently found to have DMAA in their systems when they died.
