A new study has found that women who take high dose formulations of the birth control pill Ovcon may have up to a 50% increased risk of developing breast cancer compared to women who use moderate or low dose contraceptives. Breast cancer is a disease in which malignant cells form in the tissues of the breast, which can then spread (metastasize) to other parts of the body. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide, claiming the lives of hundreds of thousands of women annually and affecting countries at all levels of modernization.

What is Ovcon?
Manufactured and marketed by Warner Chilcott Company, Inc., Ovcon is an oral contraceptive that contains estrogen and a progestin to prevent pregnancy. The drug is designed to work by preventing ovulation and making it difficult for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus. If a fertilized egg does not attach to the uterus, it is excreted from the woman’s body. Ovcon is available in 35 and 50 microgram (mcg) strengths.
Taken Ovcon Lately? You May be at Risk of Developing Breast Cancer.
Birth control pills are a constant subject of debate within the medical community. Oral contraceptives are effective for preventing pregnancy, but at what cost? Is the introduction of synthetic hormones harmful to the body or not?
A new study published in the journal Cancer Research suggests that higher dose estrogen birth control pills may be linked to an increased risk for breast cancer. Researchers found that women who used high-dose estrogen oral contraceptives like Ovcon-50 were twice as likely to develop breast cancer compared to women who took moderate or low-dose formulations.
Since oral contraceptives were introduced to the U.S. market in the 1960s, there have been many changes to the products, including a decrease in estrogen due to safety concerns and the possibility of users developing certain kinds of cancer. The WHO has classified birth control pills as carcinogenic, citing increased rates of liver, cervical and breast cancer among users of the drugs.
Women currently have about a 1-in-7 chance of getting breast cancer at some point in their lifetime, but the new study suggests the odds could be significantly increased when coupled with high-estrogen birth control pills and genetic risk factors. Results indicate the risk was highest in those who recently taken oral contraceptives that contained high doses of estrogen, but the study also noted that the women with breast cancer were more likely to have a family history of the disease.
About Ovcon Class Action Lawsuits
Although we are a nationally recognized class action firm, the Products Liability Litigation Group at our law firm has decided against the filing of an Ovcon Class Action Suit, and is currently filing individual claims on behalf of individuals and/or their family members that have been diagnosed with breast cancer after taking Ovcon.
A class action is a type of lawsuit filed with the court on behalf of large group of people or “class” of individuals that have been injured or wronged. The class is represented by the law firm and the case is generally decided upon a single member of the class who is sometimes referred to as the “class representative or class rep.”
Why Our Law Firm Is Filing Individual Lawsuits Opposed To a Class Action
In some instances, a class action may offer some advantages, as they aggregate a large number of individualized claims into one representational lawsuit. The aggregation can increase the efficiency of the legal process, lower the costs of litigation and in some cases offer the solution to a common problem wherein small recoveries do not provide the incentive for any individual or law firm to file an individual lawsuit.
However, a class action suit can also be a detriment to many class members, as they are often forced into a blanket “low ball settlement” and higher attorney fees. At Schmidt & Clark, LLP we understand that our clients are suffering emotionally and economically due to loss of wages and/or high medical bills and we plan to maximize each client’s recovery by filing individual Ovcon Lawsuits on their behalf.
