Overview
Oseni is a prescription incretin mimetic drug that helps control blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. The drug works by regulating the level of insulin the body produces after eating. Nesina is made by Takeda Pharmaceuticals, and was approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in January 2013.
What's the Problem?
incretin mimetics treat type 2 diabetes by stimulating beta cells in the pancreas to produce more insulin. Studies have shown that this mechanism of action can cause a low-level, “silent” chronic inflammation (pancreatitis). Pancreatitis itself can be deadly, but chronic pancreatitis increases the risk of pancreatic cancer.

FDA Warning
In March 2013, FDA issued a Drug Safety Communication [1] regarding the risk of pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer associated with incretin mimetic use. After analyzing the results of a study that looked at the pancreases of patients who were treated with an incretin mimetic, they found convincing evidence of potential safety risks, including “Increased risk of pancreatitis, or inflammation of the pancreas, and pre-cancerous cellular changes called pancreatic duct metaplasia.”
