What is Kratom?

Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is a tropical evergreen tree native to countries in Southeastern Asia including Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. The tree’s leaves are consumed either by chewing, smoking, drinking as a tea, or taking in capsule form. Kratom’s effects are purported to be unique by its advocates as it is said to deliver its effects rather mildly compared to opioid depressants, which pack a much greater punch.

Salmonella Symptoms

Salmonella infection, or salmonellosis, is a common bacterial disease that affects the intestinal tract. Illness typically results from raw or undercooked meat, poultry, eggs, or egg products. The incubation period (time from ingestion of offending foodstuffs and the onset of symptoms) ranges from several hours to a few days. When they do present, symptoms of salmonella infection include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Headache
  • Blood in the stool

Kratom Illnesses Responsible for Surge in Calls to Poison Control Centers

A new report published in the Journal of Clinical Toxicology shows a 52-fold increase in kratom reports to poison control centers from 2011 to 2017. The report also points to a 41-state salmonella outbreak linked to kratom products as evidence of growing problems with the substance. The outbreak from Jan. 2017-May 2018 included 199 lab-confirmed patients, with 50 people admitted to hospitals, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

CDC and the FDA concluded their outbreak investigation last May, but both agencies continue to keep a close eye on adverse events associated with kratom. CDC says additional infections are likely because a variety of different kratom products are still being sold, and the FDA has documented widespread salmonella contamination within those products.
