Opioid Epidemic has “Peaked”: Cleveland Clinic CEO

The opioid epidemic in the U.S., which currently kills more people than breast cancer, has “peaked,” according to Dr. Toby Cosgrove, former CEO of the Cleveland Clinic and one of the nation’s leading voices on healthcare reform.

August 14, 2018 – “We’re starting to see the understanding of the problem,” Cosgrove said Monday on CNBC’s “Squawk Box.” “[We] are getting to the point where people are certainty prescribing fewer drugs and people are recognizing how serious this is.”

What’s the Problem?

Cosgrove made sure to temper the good news with a note of caution, as opioids are still a huge problem at home and abroad, killing more than 100 each and every day here in the U.S.

“Carfentanil is 10,000 times as potent as morphine,” Cosgrove said. “These drugs are getting laced. We just had an outbreak of deaths in Ohio from drugs being laced with very potent carfentanil and fentanyl.”

President Trump has criticized big pharma for its part in causing the problem, and submitted a plan to bring the number of opioid prescriptions in the U.S. under control.

Google announced last month that Cosgrove would join the Google Cloud Healthcare and Life Sciences team as an executive advisor. He will assist in the Alphabet unit’s goal of lowering health costs and improving patient experiences.

Cosgrove worked as CEO of the Cleveland Clinic for more than a dozen years before stepping down in May 2017.
