What is Olumiant?
Olumiant (baricitinib) is a prescription medicine used to treat adults with moderately to severely active rheumatoid arthritis (RA) who have tried at least 1 other medicine called a tumor necrosis factor (TNF) antagonist that did not work well enough or could not be tolerated. The drug was approved by the FDA on May 31, 2018.
Olumiant Labeling to Carry Warning for Heart Attack, Cancer, Blood Clots, Death
The FDA on September 1, 2021, announced that it was requiring revisions to the Boxed Warning (1) on Olumiant and 2 other similar Janus Kinase (JAK) inhibitor drugs, Xeljanz/Xeljanz XR (tofacitinib) and Rinvoq (upadacitinib), to include information about the risks of serious heart-related events, cancer, blood clots, and death.
“Based on the review of a large randomized safety clinical trial, the FDA has concluded there is an increased risk of serious heart-related events such as heart attack or stroke, cancer, blood clots, and death with the arthritis and ulcerative colitis medicines Xeljanz and Xeljanz XR,” FDA said. “The FDA is requiring new and updated warnings for two other arthritis medicines in the same drug class as Xeljanz, called Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors, Olumiant and Rinvoq.”
