“Listeria infection can cause severe illness when bacteria spreads from the gut to other parts of the body, especially in newborns, those who are 65 and older, pregnant or immunocompromised,” according to U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). “The infection can produce mild food poisoning symptoms, but in severe cases result in pregnancy loss, premature birth and death in newborns.”

Where was the Recalled Cheese Sold?

The recalled cheeses were distributed from August 01, 2022, through September 28, 2022, and were available at supermarkets, wholesale and retail stores nationwide and in Mexico; retailers include Albertsons, Safeway, Meijer, Harding’s, Shaw’s, Price Chopper, Market Basket, Raley’s, Save Mart, Giant Foods, Stop & Shop, Fresh Thyme, Lidl, Sprouts, Athenian Foods, Whole Foods (may not be a comprehensive list of establishments that have received the recalled product).

Old Europe Cheese, Inc., initiated the recall after it performed a full environmental audit of 120 samples, both of its products and facilities and found that one of the facilities’ samples tested positive for listeria.

The company has stopped producing the brie and Camembert products until further notice and is working with state and federal authorities to make the recall a fast and efficient process. Affected cheeses have best-by dates through December 14, 2022, FDA said.

Listeria Symptoms

Signs and symptoms of a listeria infection (listeriosis) may include:

Diarrhea
