FDA Issues Warning About Severe Skin Reactions with Zyprexa, Symbyax

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that labels of olanzapine-containing antipsychotic medications will be updated with a warning about a severe skin reaction called Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms (DRESS). Brand name versions of olanzapine include Zyprexa, Zyprexa Zydis, Zyprexa Relprevv, Symbyax and generics.

What’s the Problem?

May 10, 2016 – A search of the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database identified at least 23 cases of DRESS — including one death — associated with olanzapine since the drug was first approved in 1996. DRESS may start as a rash that can spread to all parts of the body. Symptoms may include fever, swollen lymph nodes and/or a swollen face. The condition is characterized by a long latency (2 to 8 weeks) between olanzapine exposure and the onset of symptoms, a prolonged course with frequent relapses despite discontinuation of the drug, and a mortality rate of 10% or more.

Olanzapine is an antipsychotic medication used to treat mental health disorders include schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. In addition to being linked to DRESS, olanzapine may increase the risk of birth defects in babies born to mother who take the drug during pregnancy.

If you are currently taking olanzapine, contact your doctor immediately if you begin noticing any of the above listed symptoms. However, you should never quit or switch prescription medications without talking to your doctor first. Healthcare providers should describe the signs and symptoms of DRESS to patients before prescribing olanzapine and tell them when to seek emergency care.
