According to the National Institute of Health document from 2022, studies have shown that women who use talcum powder products like Nivea Pure Talc for feminine hygiene have an increased risk of developing certain forms of cancer, including ovarian cancer and fallopian tube cancer [1].

According to a 2016 study published in the journal Epidemiology, which examined the association between ovarian cancer and genital talc use, researchers analyzed the link between talc use and ovarian cancer in 2,041 cases of epithelial ovarian cancer and 2,100 age- and residence-matched controls. [2].

In the overall analysis, the utilization of genital talc showed an odds ratio (OR) of 1.33 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.16, 1.52), revealing a discernible trend of increased risk corresponding to talc years.

Women engaging in talc use were found to have a higher likelihood of being older, having a higher body weight, experiencing asthma, and being regular users of analgesics—factors that did not act as confounders.

The dose–response patterns were notably more evident among pre-menopausal women, particularly nonsmokers, heavier individuals, and postmenopausal users of hormone therapy (HT).

Ovarian cancer subtypes are more prone to association with talc-encompassed invasive serous and endometrioid tumors, as well as borderline serous and mucinous tumors.

Among premenopausal women and postmenopausal HT users with these subtypes, accumulating more than 24 talc-years resulted in odds ratios (ORs) of 2.33 (95% CI: 1.32, 4.12) and 2.57 (95% CI: 1.51, 4.36), respectively.

Multiple studies of ovarian cancer and genital talc use have led only to consensus about possible carcinogenicity, the researchers concluded. Risks for epithelial ovarian cancer from genital talc use vary by histologic subtype, menopausal status at diagnosis, HT use, weight, and smoking. These observations suggest that estrogen and/or prolactin may play a role via macrophage activity and inflammatory response to talc.

How Can Talc Cause Cancer?

According to the American Cancer Society study from 2023, talc, the main ingredient in Nivea Pure Talc, is a naturally occurring mineral composed of magnesium, silicon, and oxygen [3].

The substance is renowned for its ability to absorb moisture, reduce friction, and prevent rashes. Talc-based products have been marketed for decades to women for feminine hygiene purposes such as body powder and genital deodorant sprays.

According to an editorial published in JAMA in January 2020, it has been found that talc particles may enter the female reproductive system through tampons, sanitary pads, and diaphragms that are dusted with baby powder [4].

Talc particles that reach the ovaries can result in the growth of ovarian cancer cells. Experts estimate that roughly one in five women in the U.S. applies a talcum powder product to her genitals regularly.

Symptoms of Ovarian Cancer

As claimed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notice from 2023, ovarian cancer often starts silently, not showing symptoms until its later stages [5], when symptoms do present, they may include:

  • Bloating
  • Pelvic pain
  • Urinary problems

Pay attention to your body, and know what is normal for you. If you have unusual vaginal bleeding, see a doctor right away, CDC said. If you have any of the other signs for two weeks or longer and they are not normal for you, see a doctor. They may be caused by something other than cancer, but the only way to know is to see a doctor.

How Do I Know if Talcum Powder Caused Ovarian Cancer?

According to the National Center for Health and Research from 2021, talc fibers can be found in the ovaries and fallopian tubes for years after entering a woman’s reproductive system [6].

Talc fibers take years to disintegrate and cause inflammation in the ovaries, which is believed to increase the risk of cancer. If talc fibers are present in your ovarian tissues, our researchers will identify them.

Based on many research studies involving thousands of women, those who have used talcum powder are about 30% more likely to be diagnosed with ovarian cancer than women who have not, NCHR said.

This means that over her lifetime, a woman who uses talcum powder increases her chances of developing ovarian cancer from 1.3% to 1.7%. That is still a low risk for any individual woman, but if 1 million women use talcum powder, approximately 4,000 more of those women will develop ovarian cancer, compared to the number that would have developed ovarian cancer if they hadn’t used talcum powder.

Talc Cancer Lawsuit Allegations

Talcum powder lawsuits allege that manufacturers failed to warn consumers about the potential risk of ovarian cancer to women when talc is applied to the genitals. The complaints also allege that these health risks were known to manufacturers for years or even decades, but they ignored the data in an effort to maximize profits.
