What's the Problem?
This recall affects 2002-2006 Nissan Sentra vehicles whose passenger airbags were previously inspected and may have been released without replacing the Takata airbag inflator, according to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Takata frontal passenger airbag inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, or high-temperature cycling, NHTSA said. An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the occupants, causing severe injuries or death.
Nissan is notifying owners and dealers will inspect the recalled Sentras and, if necessary, replace the airbag inflator for free.
