August 15, 2018 – New York City health department officials believe the Legionnaires outbreak started in a cooling tower at the Sugar Hill Project on Saint Nicholas Avenue, according to CBS New York.

What’s the Problem?
Officials said Legionella bacteria from the cooling tower matched strains from patients. In total, at least 27 people were sickened in Washington Heights and Hamilton Heights, including one person who died. The cooling tower has since been disinfected, health officials said.

What Causes Legionnaires’ Disease?
Legionnaires is a severe form of pneumonia — lung inflammation resulting from an infection, according to the Mayo Clinic. Legionnaires’ disease is caused by a bacterium known as Legionella pneumophila.
Signs and Symptoms
The primary symptoms of Legionnaires’ disease include:
- Muscle pain
- Fever that may be 104 F (40 C) or higher
Subsequent symptoms which may arise a short time later (usually 2 to 3 days after the primary symptoms) include:
- Cough, which may bring up mucus and sometimes blood
- Shortness of breath
- Chest pain
- Gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea
- Confusion or other mental changes
