Nesina Heart Failure
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in April 2016 warned that Nesina increases the risk of heart failure, especially in patients with pre-existing heart disease or kidney problems. The warning was prompted by results of the SAVOR clinical trial, which linked saxagliptin, the active ingredient in Nesina, to a 27% increased risk of heart failure.
These findings are concerning because type-2 diabetes itself is a risk factor for heart disease, cardiovascular events, stroke, and death. The following clinical trials found that patients on DPP-4 inhibitors were more likely to be hospitalized with heart failure:
- EXAMINE: A study involving a cohort of more than 5,000 patients found that 3.9% of patients (109 people) on alogliptin were hospitalized with heart failure vs. 3.3% (89 patients) on a placebo.
- SAVOR-TIMI: A study involving 16,500 patients found a 27% increased risk of hospitalization for heart failure in patients on Onglyza (saxagliptin) vs. placebo (3.5% vs. 2.8%). A possible increased risk of all-cause mortality was also observed.
Nesina Pancreatic Cancer
Nesina treats type-2 diabetes by stimulating beta cells in the pancreas to produce more insulin. Animal studies have found that this mechanism of action can cause a low-level, “silent” chronic inflammation (pancreatitis). Pancreatitis itself can be deadly, but chronic pancreatitis increases the risk of pancreatic cancer.
In March 2013, the FDA issued a warning about the risk of pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer associated with Nesina. After reviewing unpublished results from a study in which doctors examined the pancreases of patients who were taking an incretin mimetic, they found alarming evidence of safety risks, including:
“Increased risk of pancreatitis, or inflammation of the pancreas, and pre-cancerous cellular changes called pancreatic duct metaplasia.”
About Class Action Lawsuits
A class action is a type of lawsuit filed with the court on behalf of a large group of people or a “class” of individuals who have been injured or wronged. The class is represented by the law firm and the case is generally decided upon a single member of the class who is sometimes referred to as the “class representative or class rep.”
Why Our Law Firm Is Filing Individual Lawsuits Opposed To a Class Action
In some instances, a class action may offer some advantages, as it aggregates a large number of individualized claims into one representational lawsuit.
The aggregation can increase the efficiency of the legal process, lower the costs of litigation, and in some cases offer the solution to a common problem wherein small recoveries do not provide the incentive for any individual or law firm to file an individual lawsuit.
However, a class action suit can also be a detriment to many class members, as they are often forced into a blanket “lowball settlement” and higher attorney fees.
At Schmidt & Clark, LLP we understand that our clients are suffering emotionally and economically due to loss of wages and/or high medical bills and we plan to maximize each client’s recovery by filing individual Nesina lawsuits on their behalf.
