NaturaLyte, a popular dialysis treatment product manufactured by Fresenius Medical Care (FMC), has recently been linked to serious side effects including heart attacks, strokes, and cardiopulmonary death. In response to an abnormally large number of adverse health complications reported in users of this product, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued a nationwide Class I Recall for NaturaLyte on March 29, 2012. The NaturaLyte Lawyers at Schmidt & Clark, LLP, are currently accepting potential lawsuits on behalf of individuals injured by NaturaLyte side effects.

NaturaLyte Side Effects
Recent studies have indicated that NaturaLyte dialysis treatment products have the potential to cause metabolic alkalosis, a condition that can lead to severe cardiovascular events. The FDA has received numerous complaints describing alkali dosing errors that occurred during dialysis procedures which involved NaturaLyte. When mixed incorrectly, NaturaLyte can contribute to elevated levels of bicarbonate in the blood, which can lead to the following adverse health complications:
- Low blood pressure
- Cardiopulmonary arrest
- Cardiac arrhythmia
- Sudden heart attack
- Hemodialysis cardiopulmonary arrest
- Cardiopulmonary death
A recent article published in the New York Times reported that Fresenius had prior knowledge about NaturaLyte’s ability to cause these types of serious side effects; however, the company only circulated an internal memo detailing these risks to doctors at its own clinics. In the memo, FMC executives warned doctors that NaturaLyte caused higher levels of bicarbonates to develop in the blood than rival products, which resulted in at least 941 heart attacks suffered by dialysis patients at the company’s own clinics in 2010 alone. The memo went on to state that NaturaLyte could increase the heart attack risk by up to six times. But instead of sharing this information with the public, FMC decided to keep it secret. Months later, the FDA was leaked a copy of the memo and began investigating the matter.
On March 29, 2012, the FDA issued a nationwide recall for NaturaLyte and GranuFlo (another popular dialysis treatment product manufactured by Fresenius) after it was determined that use of the products can lead to elevated levels of bicarbonate in the human bloodstream. In its recall announcement, the administration stated that FMC failed to disclose vital NaturaLyte safety information to healthcare providers about the risk of high bicarbonate levels when administering the product. Due to this negligence on the part of the company, thousands of dialysis patients were put at unnecessary risk of developing severe side effects.
Since approximately one-third of the nearly 400,000 dialysis patients in the United States were being treated with NaturaLyte at the time it was recalled, litigation is the next logical step. Although Class I Recalls do not require dialysis clinics to stop using NaturaLyte, this does not mean that victims who were injured by the product cannot file NaturaLyte lawsuits. If you or someone you love suffered a serious injury that may have been caused by NaturaLyte, you should contact the NaturaLyte Lawyers at Schmidt & Clark, LLP, today. We believe that Fresenius knowingly withheld vital safety information about NaturaLyte from the public, thereby subjecting thousands of patients to serious injuries and even death.
NaturaLyte Lawsuit Update
As of Jan. 2015, more than 2,000 GranuFlo and NaturaLyte lawsuits have been included in the multidistrict litigation (MDL) currently pending in Massachusetts Federal Court before U.S. District Judge Douglas P. Woodlock. The first trial is schedule to begin in Jan. 2016., with the next beginning a month later.
