Salmonella Risk Prompts 2nd Garlic Powder Recall
March 18, 2015 – For the second time this week, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a nationwide recall for organic garlic powder products [1] after they were found to contain Salmonella. The latest recall was initiated by Vitamin Cottage Natural Food Markets after the company was notified by its supplier that its garlic powder had tested positive for the bacteria.
On March 16, Frontier Co-op announced that it was recalling garlic powder contained in dozens of food items sold under its Frontier and Simply Organic brand names, as well as one product sold under the Whole Foods brand.

Optimization of Salmonella Detection in Garlic Powders: Study
Salmonella bacteria has been the source of many food poisoning outbreaks linked to spice consumption. However, because of the antimicrobial properties of various spices, salmonella detection in spices continues to be illusive.
The objective of a March 2020 study published in the International Journal of Food Microbiology [2.] was to optimize an enrichment broth for salmonella growth in different spices and tea, in order to maintain an adequate pH and decrease the antimicrobial effects of spices during Salmonella detection.
Salmonella-tainted spices and tea dried samples were prepared and the detection of salmonella was assessed using automated DNA extraction and RT-PCR. Double strength Buffered Peptone Water (BPW) was used to maintain pH, and L-cysteine and DL-serine were added to the broth to reduce the effects of antimicrobial compounds in spices.
The results indicated that salmonella detection was achieved in <24 h in the modified (BPW + L-cysteine and DL-serine) enrichment broth followed by detection by RT-PCR. This protocol could allow for a more rapid, robust, and sensitive enrichment method for salmonella in spices, the study’s authors concluded.
Salmonella Poisoning
Consumption of foods that contain Salmonella bacteria can cause severe, potentially life-threatening infections in children, the elderly, and people with compromised immune systems.
Symptoms of salmonella infection in otherwise healthy individuals typically include varying degrees of fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare cases, Salmonella can invade the bloodstream and cause more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis.
